The Lake District and North Yorkshire offer the prettiest, unspoiled landscapes in England. You will see castles, Roman walls, abbeys and stately homes set in breathtaking surroundings and dating back over the past 2000 years.
The landscape painter John Constable declared that the Lake District had the 'finest scenery that ever was' with its awe inspiring peaks and shimmering lakes. At over ten miles long the dramatic watery expanse of Lake Windermere is England's largest lake. Hill Top Cottage, home of Beatrix Potter, is close by and still furnished with her original possessions.
The peaceful Coniston Water was the inspirational setting for Arthur Ransome's novel Swallows and Amazons but was also the scene of Donald Campbell's fatal attempt at a new land speed record in 1967. Rydal Water, one of the major attractions of the Lake District, was home to the poet William Wordsworth. 'Dove Cottage' is where the poet spent most of his creative years. A fantastic setting of two pretty villages on the shores of sparkling lakes.
Taking the drive from the Lake District across the Yorkshire Moors and Dales has to be one of the most scenic journeys one can take in England.
Spend an afternoon visiting the ancient city of York and visit The Shambles which is arguably the best preserved medieval street in the world. York Minster is a must as it is the largest Gothic structure north of the Alps and contains over half of all the medieval stained glass in England. A visit to Yorkshire would not be complete without seeing Castle Howard which is renowned as one of the grandest private residences in Britain and became world-famous as the location used in Brideshead Revisited. Yorkshire is also home to a bevy of Michelin-starred restaurants and inns.
